There are so many letters that faded and disappeared from the alphabet somewhere during translation. In this post, we will examine three of them!

R Rotunda {ꝛ}

This is an old version of the lowercase form of "R". It was used when the letter "r" followed a letter with a rounded stroke towards the right side, such as o, b, p, h. It didn't sound different, it was only a variation in writing. The R Rotunda fell out of use in the 16th century when roman literature became more prevalent.

O with a Ring {ⱺ}

The O with a Ring was used in the Latin alphabet for a brief time after it was absorbed from the Landsmålsalfabetet. This was a phonetic alphabet created in 1878 by Johan August Lundell to transcribe Swedish dialects. It contained 118 characters that each stood for a Swedish sound.

Five {Ƽƽ}

Ƽƽ a letter of the Latin alphabet used in the Zhuang alphabet from 1957 to 1986 to indicate its fifth tone, high-rising [˧˥]. In 1986 it was replaced by q. It was (unfortunately) never used in Latin or English orthography.
